“Book Table” campaign against FGM/C
Every year on February 6, TDF calls for a “Book Table” campaign: numerous bookshops and libraries throughout Germany then display books and information material on FGM/C in their shop windows or on tables specially prepared for the occasion. The aim is to draw public attention to the subject of FGM/C and the work of TDF against FGM/C. To this end, TDF compiles new literature lists every year, which volunteers pass on to interested bookshops and libraries, and dispatches the latest books, brochures, and flyers.
Bookshops and libraries thus help to spread the knowledge about FGM/C in Germany and increase the willingness of readers to contribute to ending FGM/C.

Background:
In 2012, the UN Human Rights Council officially designated February 6 as the International Day against Female Genital Mutilation. Earlier, in 2003, the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children had proclaimed this day at an international conference in Ethiopia under the motto “Zero Tolerance to FGM.” The goal was to strengthen ongoing campaigns against FGM/C. The conference was attended by First Ladies from four African countries, ministers, representatives from the United Nations and the African Union, as well as activists from over 40 nations.
