Mothers

Many mothers in Sierra Leone firmly believe that they must have their daughters undergo FGM/C in order to secure them a good future. They see FGM/C as a prerequisite for marriageability – and thus for the economic and social security of their daughters in a society that offers women few alternative opportunities. That is why AIM reaches out to mothers to highlight the immense dangers of FGM/C, and encourages them to support their daughters’ education instead. In the “Mothers Clubs” organized by AIM, women are empowered to take a stand against FGM/C within their own communities.
