Flag campaign on November 25th
On November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, TDF hosts its annual flag campaign. The International Day was first declared in 1981 and later recognized by the United Nations in 1999. It commemorates the murder of the three Mirabal sisters, who were killed by the military secret service in the Dominican Republic on 25 November 1960 after months of torture. They had been involved in the underground resistance against the tyrannical dictator Trujillo.
In 2001, TDF developed its own flag with the slogan “live free without violence” and for the first time publicly called for people to unite worldwide on November 25th to take a stand against violence. Since then, supporters from politics, business, and civil society continue to raise the flag, for example, on public buildings and offices, to make violence against women visible. With this campaign, they call for stronger protection against violence and systematic support for those affected. The flag can be ordered from TDF in multiple languages, along with informational and campaign materials upon request. The flag is being raised annually not only in Germany, but also in other parts of the world, including Kenya, Honduras, and Romania.
Additionally, TDF always hosts a media campaign against violence against women in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on November 25th. FGM/C has frequently been the central theme of this event, most recently in 2017.
